English term

floor of the sky

Not for points English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature understanding an expression
I am translating an English novel into Hungarian. The writer uses plenty of artistic, creative images in the text. I encountered "floor of the sky" two times:

"The sun below the horizon shot pink arms along the clear floor of the sky. The waiting air was thin and still. Cattle in the next field, statues of petrified flesh, faced the eastern rim of the morning world, and waited. The leaves in the distant trees were motionless."

and later:

"A drop of rain, large and heavy as a penny, splashed my handle bars. Then another, and another. I gaped upward, open-mouthed. A black carpet of cloud unrolled across the floor of the sky, reached for the sun, and the sun lost its heat and was swept under the carpet like golden dust."

Does this expression refer to the imaginary surface of the sky? Is this expression used at all in spoken language?
Thank you for your help

Discussion

Christine Andersen May 18, 2018:
It's an unusual metaphor, not used at all to my knowledge in spoken language. It reminds me of a glass art installation (Micha Karlslund, The Sky Beneath Us) in which viewers walked above clouds and glimpses of the earth below - inspired by the view from an aeroplane.

It's just another way of saying horizon

The author is the sort of guy who will never use one word where twenty would do.

agree philgoddard : I don't think you can ever be sure with texts like this, but that would be my interpretation. Using it twice is not very good writing.

Thank you.
agree B D Finch : Yes, just one of several very clumsy metaphors in the (mercifully) short extract posted.

Thank you.
agree Katalin Horváth McClure : I agree, and Péter, we have "az ég alja" in Hungarian which would work well in the translation at both places.

Earth is the floor of the sky.
Note from asker:
Thank you, I also found this reference before, I was just not sure if "the floor of the sky" was used in the same waqy there.
...way there.

agree B D Finch : That demonstrates how much better a writer Willa Cather was than whoever wrote the novel the Asker is translating!
