Portuguese term

cota

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Tombamento de edificações
O Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca compreende todas as áreas situadas acima da **cota** de 100 m do Maciço da Pedra Branca e seus contrafortes.

Discussion

R. Alex Jenkins Oct 6, 2018:
It is superfluous... It is of course necessary to be 'above' something, agreed, and in this instance the text refers to "all areas 100 m above the Maciço da Pedra Branca...". If you want to express the wording as "all areas 100 m above the 'level/elevation' of the Maciço da Pedra Branca..." that's your prerogative as a translator.

My suggestion is good.

Not superfulous "all areas above 100 m .. "all areas above the 100 m level.. "all areas above the 100 m elevation..l
Mario Freitas Sep 24, 2018:
Exactly, That's it, Robert. However, in civil engineering, we call these "levels" elevations.
If you translate it as "all areas at 100 m above..." you will limit these areas to those at exactly 100 m. But the text refers to all areas above 100 m, to infinity.
airmailrpl Sep 24, 2018:
*all of the areas above the **100 m level** *todas as áreas situadas acima da **cota** de 100 m => *all of the areas above the **100 m level**
Mario Freitas Sep 23, 2018:
Not superfulous at all It does not mean it's 100m above anything. It means the landscape is marked with "cotas" or elevations. So all areas above the 100 m elevation are all areas from 100.1 to 3000 m high, not only those 100 m above...

(it's superfluous, remove it)

"todas as áreas situadas acima da **cota** de 100 m..."

"all areas located 100 m above..."

Apologies for not giving you a 'proper' translation here, but there's no need to literally translate "cota" here.

All The Best,
Richard

elevation

In engineering, geology, geography, etc., "cota" refers to the elevation.

...compreende todas as áreas situadas acima da **cota** de 100 m do Maciço da Pedra Branca = comprises all areas located above the 100m elevation of the Pedra Branca range. Isto quer dizer qualquer coisa ACIMA de 100m, não "all areas located 100 m above" que limitaria as áreas tão somente às localizadas a 100 m de altura, excluindo todas as mais elevadas.

agree Charles R. Castleberry : at an elevation of 100m as opposed to 100m above sea level....http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/geology/leveson/core/links...

Thank you Charles. The original text actually says "all areas above the 100m elevation".
