French term

éducateur médico-sportif

French to English Medical Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Hello,
This profession is also known as Professeur d’activités physiques adaptées (APA).
You will find a very thorough description here:
https://www.profession-sport-loisirs.fr/sites/national/files...

Anyone know what this is called in English (US preferably)?

Thank you!

Discussion

Idna (asker) Jan 28, 2019:
Oh, I know, thank you. They put that in the French for some reason but I was planning on telling them that it's music therapy. I just forgot to delete it here. Thanks again for your help!
philgoddard Jan 24, 2019:
Thanks!
Musicothérapie is music therapy, by the way, not music care.
Idna (asker) Jan 24, 2019:
Oops you're right. It's on a webiste, a list of supportive care professionals cancer patients can see when they're on chemo:
Suite à cette évaluation, ou à sa demande, la patiente est orientée vers les intervenants des soins de support :
• Médecin de la douleur
• Educateur médico-sportif et programme d’activité physique adaptée
• Psychologue
• Diététicienne
• Assistante sociale
• Consultation mémoire
• Musicothérapie (Music Care)
• Socio-esthéticienne
philgoddard Jan 23, 2019:
Based solely on your reference, this is a particular kind of physiotherapy based on exercise, which may or may not include sports. It may exist only in French-speaking countries.
I think the translation will depend on the context, which you haven't given. For example, it may need to be left in French, with an explanation.

exercise physiologist

I think this is a good equivalent.

Despite being called a "professeur" or "éducateur", this is a therapist working in a medical setting. And in French, "sport" doesn't necessarily mean sport - it can mean exercise. In my reference, a "salle de sport" is a fitness room, and "faire du sport" can mean "work out".

"Exercise physiologists analyze their patients’ fitness in order to help them improve their health or maintain good health. They help patients with heart disease and other chronic conditions, like diabetes or pulmonary (lung) disease, to regain their health. They also work with both amateur and professional athletes who are hoping to boost their performance."

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This seems to fit the bill perfectly although I am not particularly fond of the word "physiologist". Many thanks!"

neutral philgoddard : This simply doesn't reflect what the asker's context says.

sports therapist

If the person is working in a multidisciplinary rehab context, then "sports therapist" may be a good choice of term.

You may prefer something a little more descriptive and I had first thought of something with "rehabilitation" or "remedial". I don't think that is quite such a good match as "sports therapist" in view of the description you have given as context.

There is no need to seek to translate the term "médico". The term "therapist" conveys both the educational and the medical notions.
Note from asker:
Since I am targeting a US audience I am going to go with philgoddard's answer but I loved this and actually do prefer the term "therapist". Thank you for your idea!!
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I think this is close but, as I've said in my answer, "sport" in French can translate as "exercise".

Of course, but the favoured term for the UK seems to be "sports therapist". ;-)
