a volte si legge "bloccati su un lastrone di ghiaccio (alla deriva)", ma gli orsi polari sono ottimi nuotatori, quindi non sono bloccati. Il problema è che cacciano "*dal* ghiaccio, non sulla terraferma. Se il ghiaccio marino scompare, rimangono bloccati a terra, dove c'è poco da cacciare (una conseguenza fra le altre è che si avvicinano ai centri abitati). Quindi non è che si perdono, semmai sono "persi", nel senso che non sanno più cosa fare.

Gli orsi polari cacciano dal ghiaccio, catturando per lo più cuccioli di foca che emergono in superficie per prendere aria, e con la riduzione del ghiaccio marino sono costretti a percorrere distanze più lunghe per trovare cibo, consumando ancora più energie.

Oslo, Norway - The plight of a female polar bear and her two cubs stranded on a remote arctic island may be an early warning about the possible impact of climate change, said WWF today.

The mother bear and her cubs are stuck on Bear Island, half way between northern Norway and the Svalbard archipelago. The mother came out of her winter den too late to leave the small island via the sea ice which surrounded it during the winter. Due to warming temperatures, the sea ice has melted northward leaving the bears stranded and facing a hungry summer.
