Somewhat analogous to a ranch, the distinctly Australian stations are run by graziers in remote and somewhat inhospitable areas. They are often immense to compensate for thinly productive grazing ground and the occasional drought. Predictably, cattle stations stock cattle and sheep stations stock sheep. Wild dingoes find sheep to be delicious and defenseless, so graziers in dingo-infested areas traditionally shifted their stock to the (mostly) dingo-proof cattle.

Il termine outback si riferisce, in modo generico, alle semi-desertiche e più remote aree interne del continente australiano. L'outback viene anche indicato con espressioni come il cuore rosso dell'Australia, o il centro rosso (the Red Centre), a causa del terreno ricco di ferro e quindi di colore rossiccio. Per il 90%, la "Terra Australis" non è coltivabile a causa proprio dell'aridità del terreno tipico dell'outback. Nonostante questo, nel sottosuolo australiano sono presenti moltissime falde acquifere, con una portata d'acqua in grado di riempire oltre 20 milioni di piscine olimpioniche.
