Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Yvonne Gallagher, Rachel Fell, Jennifer White

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

marlene dolitsky Dec 30, 2020:
fifth cousin "cousin germain" is my "first cousin", she is my mother's/father's sister's/brother's son or daughter. Yes, we share one set of grandparents. My second cousin is my mother's cousin and so forth ... so I agree with 5th cousin.
Suzie Withers Dec 30, 2020:
As per Annie's answer, there is also the concept of the degree of kinship (parenté) which is not the same as the degree of "cousins" (cousinage). But it looks like your text is talking about "cousinage" as suggested by use of "cousins", so I believe it is fifth cousin and not "cousins once removed" (Annie's proposal)

It was proving to be something of a headache comparing Fr and EN genealogy charts - the client having queried the accuracy of "5th cousin" in my translation, so thanks for your help and a happy and let's hope somewhat different new year to all!
Suzie Withers Dec 30, 2020:
Fifth cousins Cousins who share the same great-great-great-great grandparents:

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_(famille)

First cousins share the same grandparents, so it just adds four more generations to that
claude-andrew (asker) Dec 30, 2020:
Thanks Emmanuella, I've reversed the languages.

First cousins once removed

The fifth degree of kinship includes: first cousins once removed; great grand nephews/great grand nieces and great grand uncles/great grand aunts
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : That's the "5th degree of kinship", and specifically does NOT include 5th cousins!

I always imagine that if people ask for help with their translation projects, it means that the answer can't be that simple. I am glad that I made someone look good though!
