German term

Ruhegebiet

quiet area

Not a term that I have heard of in a US context, but seems to be used in Europe, if my source is anything to go by:
"Noise pollution is a major problem for Europe’s environment. Transport and industry are the main sources of concern and prolonged exposure can damage human health and adversely affect ecosystems. European legislation aims to reduce noise pollution and also highlights the need to preserve areas that are currently unaffected. These so called quiet areas are an important component of the European soundscape and may offer havens away from noise pollution. This report sets out to identify where these potential quiet areas might be and offers an insight into how they could benefit the human and wildlife populations that inhabit or benefit from the rural European soundscape that is currently unaffected by noise pollution."

I also thought of "noise-reduced areas" but that could be anywhere from airports to library.
There's also "quiet zone" but that's associated with railroads in the US, and "undisturbed areas" are places largely untouched by human activity.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Maybe, depending on the context, "legally protected quiet area".

agree jccantrell : In the USA, we use 'quiet zone." See: https://railroads.dot.gov/sites/fra.dot.gov/files/2020-05/Qu...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for this suggestion and especially the source. I will also suggest to add "legally protected" as philgoddard noted. Thank you all for your answers!"

recreation(al) areas

Note from asker:
Recreational area also comes up in the text as translation for Erholungsgebiet. Ruhegebiet is a particular type of recreational area.

Thanks!
neutral Cilian O'Tuama : Your reference mentions as examples amusement parks, skate parks, fairgrounds, swimming pools. Definition in source text says: weitgehende Ruhe, in der freien Natur...

[designated] area/zone of calm

I think that the key concept here is calm or calming.
Traffic-calming is already an 'official' Begriff. I don't think the Austrians have come up with an EN term to cover Ruhegebiet, so it is incumbent on the translator to find a plausible rendition.

Recreational area might include Blackpool prom.
Quiet area suggests a library.
Nature spa suggests beauty therapy and 'wellness'.

protected area

see reference - looks like protected area is the most accurate definition. See end of second paragraph - The “Ruhegebiet” Ötztal Alps has been named a Euorpean “Natura 2000” protected area in 1995.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Steffen Walter : Far too general.
1 hr
neutral Cilian O'Tuama : Might work in combination with 'Natura 2000' or 'nature park' but not on its own. And CL4 is too high for sth. that 'looks like'.

Because it is a term of art, defined as such, Ruhegebiet should be translated fully.
Note from asker:
It is a bit long, but I think it might still be helpful to use this longer version the first time the term appears - this way, the reader will understand it better. Thank you!
Peer comment(s):

agree Cilian O'Tuama : Accurate but a wee bit long.

nature reserve/ nature park

This would be the closest legal term in common use.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : CL5? Are nature reserves not wildlife protection zones? Here it's about quiet areas visited by humans for relaxation purposes. Big diff IMO.

Doesn't seem to be in particularly common use, but I think it conveys the meaning well.
