Spanish term

montarse

Spanish to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
This is an expression that means more than just dressing up as a woman...It implies a whole range of cosmetic operations. The context is a case history of a feminist psychoanalyst in Argentina

J presentaba una desvalorización de los varones y de la masculinidad en general, lo cual era compartido y transmitido por su madre. En el trascurso del análisis J comienza a frecuentar boliches queer y “cines de encuentros”. Descubre en los boliches que le gustar “montarse” de mujer.

Discussion

AllegroTrans May 12, 2023:
What exactly do you mean by "cosmetic operations" given that you have the whole text and we don't?
Jennifer Levey May 12, 2023:
@Asker Can you confirm that the last sentence of the ST extract matches the original?
In particular, shouldn't gustar read gusta?
And if that's an error caused by OCR or finger-trouble, then maybe montarse should read mostrarse - as mostrarse de mujer --> show off, parade around, as a woman.
philgoddard May 12, 2023:
How do we know it implies a whole range of cosmetic operations? Doesn't it just mean present as a woman?

get (all) dolled up

Although it's not explicit in the ST extract, it's fair to assume that 'J' had a condition now known as 'gender dysphoria', but which would have been lumped together with numerous other forms of 'diversity' or 'queerness' in mid to late 20th century Argentina. Considering also the references to boliches queer and cines de encuentros, I'm pretty sure 'montarse' is used here in the sense of emperifollarse:

Oxford Languages, via Google:
emperifollar
Adornar o arreglar en exceso a una persona o una cosa.
"le gusta emperifollarse para asistir a las fiestas"

Descubre en los boliches que le gustar (sic) montarse de mujer.

neutral Jennifer Levey : This seems to be disqualified by Asker's first sentence: "... means more than just dressing up as a woman".//Yes, of course, it's Asker's opinion - to the effect that your translation 'dress up as' doesn't adequately represent the ST author's meaning.

Montarse roughly means "to put oneself together as." From the context it is something that the person liked to do in clubs. Cosmetics may be involved, but not operatiions.
agree neilmac : The asker's comment seems to be a personal opinion rather than part of the target text. (I may be mistaken).

neutral Jennifer Levey : I imagine neilmac is referring to me, so here goes... Your translation 'might' be OK in a 21st century timeframe, but Asker's ST more likely refers to the 'queer scene' in AR (BA, probably) at least 50 years ago. IOW, we lack context.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Jennifer Levey : If you'd suggested 'pose' as in 'posing for a photograph' I might agree, but your dico def. and examples about criminal intent are way off course in this context.//My only bias is in favor of accurately reflecting the words, mood and context of the ST.

I think you may have a slight personal bias, posting such a strong disagree. My refs are simply examples of common usage.
