Italian term

tasche all'americana

Italian to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
In the description of a pair of shorts, "Pantalone corto **tasche all'americana** e chiusura a bottone davanti". Any ideas for "tasche all'americana"? Many thanks in advance, Sarah.

slant/slash pockets or scoop pockets

So I'm going to have to disagree with the other suggestion to use "side pockets" because that's too generic.

Tasche all'americana are almost always at a slant and placed on the hip, ever so slightly to the front:

Sometimes they are slightly curved, like you'd see on jeans.

If they are straight and angled, then they're slant/slash pockets (note that these are often called "tasche alla francese". If they're rounded, then they're scoop pockets or jean pockets.

When I come across this, I usually say "slant pockets at the hips" or something along those lines.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm choosing "slash pockets" as this seems to be marginally more common. Thanks to everyone."

America pockets

anche American, ma mi sembra più corretto quanto suggerito sopra
Peer comment(s):

disagree kringle : I can only find American pockets on translated Italian sites and with reference to pool tables (who knew that the latter can have American or English pockets??)

io ho suggerito America not American pockets

side pockets

In Italian, these are also called 'tasche America'. The English equivalent is side pockets, which can be slanted or flush, depending on the trouser model, style and fit.

neutral toasty : Technically they are side pockets, but side pockets could be anything and is thus too generic

Of course, side pockets can differ, as mentioned in my suggestion. No need to be specific here though, as it's likely the item description is going to be published next to its pic. Should Sarah be able to get that beforehand, she can always add a modifier

Italian term (edited): tasche all\'americana

cargo pockets

A cargo pocket is a form of a patch pocket, often with accordion folds for increased capacity closed with a flap secured by snap, button, magnet, or Velcro common on battledress and hunting clothing. In some designs, cargo pockets may be hidden within the legs.

Excuse the change please. I wasn't sure if you were referring to the shorts or only to the pockets. In any case, 'cargo pockets' and 'cargo pants' are both recognized terms.

disagree toasty : usually cargo pockets are tasche a soffietto (bellows pocket)
