maybe it refers to contacts with the population in the Walsertal (großes and kleines Walsertal/great/small Walser valley) or to the ethnic group itself the "Walser" (roughly welsh/celtic????).

Valais migrant settlement
There was a lot of migration over the hills from the Valais region of Switzerland to places as far apart as the Allgaeu in Germany and Piedmont in Italy (as well as Austria, of course). Wallis = Valais
