ok, sometimes they are called a \"President\" of the university (eg Harvard University), but this term as a translation isn\'t really appropriate in Sweden for the Swedish institution of rektor.

principal (Am. high school); dean (of a college, institute (Am., university)

Depends, as usual, on your context. In US prep school we had a Headmaster, = principal in state schools (principal or assistant principal in Swedish, according to my brother-in-law who is a studierektor/assistant principal at C4 gymnasium in Sweden), then at university there was a dean and assistant dean for each college (College of Textiles, College of Chemistry, College of Mechanical Engineering, College of Economics), also dean/assistant dean for masters' studies in engineering. Recommend that you check the homepage for the school/institute in question. Vice Chancellor is perhaps more correct in the context.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Charlesp : sorry, but a "dean" of a department is not a "rektor" - could be a "prefect" or a "decanus"
