Hi,
This is my immediate guess - the term is pretty vague. But since 'billedmæssig' qualifies 'association', it is probably a pretty good guess. Another bet would be 'figurative' (as opposed to 'literal').
Without more context it is difficult to say for certain... do you have any more context?

But to be honest, I have a difficult time figuring out what the sentence is supposed to mean. I have never heard of an association creating characterics...
