Dutch term

store in cashmier

Dutch to English Other Furniture / Household Appliances Belgian or possibly Frenchified Dutch
Description of an old house.

Met kalkverf, een vloer in gris d’Ardennes en een store in cashmier heeft ook de hal een stijlvolle uitstraling.

this is a Belgian text, but possibly written by a French speaker. A store in French could be blinds, but it seems odd to talk about cashmere blinds. Any ideas gratefully received.

Barend van Zadelhoff Jan 30, 2011:
makes perfect sense, lipabel
it turns "met kalkverf, een vloer in gris des Ardennes en een store in cashmier" into a logical sequence
in addition, these are the elements you would most likely mention when describing a hall
André Linsen Jan 30, 2011:
I think that by store, they mean a (heavy) curtain or drape (as they do in my own (Flemish) dialect). My mother used to have this kind of heavy drapes as decorative and soundproofing/insulating items in front of doors and windows.

Barend van Zadelhoff Jan 30, 2011:
well I must admit, you can look at it in a different way as well
'met kalkverf' doesn't necessarily pertain to "vloer in gris DES Ardennes" and "store in cashmier", but can also mean that the hall in general has been painted in 'kalkverf'

If so, the floor is made of this type of limestone and the 'store is in cashmier' :-)
Andre de Vries (asker) Jan 30, 2011:
cashmere white dresser maybe that would fit - although cashmere white looks more spotty than white
Andre de Vries (asker) Jan 30, 2011:
not sure Gris des Ardennes is a type of limestone - so I don't think it can be a type of paint. You wouldn't paint a floor (?)
but I think you're onto something with the cashmier
Barend van Zadelhoff Jan 30, 2011:
store painted cashmier? it would seem 'cashmier' refers to the colour of the paint, that is of the 'kalkverf'
the floor has been painted in 'gris d'Ardennes kalkverf' and the store in 'cashmier kalkverf'

Cashmire blind

store is the French word for blind
Peer comment(s):

neutral André Linsen : The text is in Flemish, not French ;-). In Flanders we tend to use a lot of French words incorrectly in our dialects (see my discussion entry). It is cashmere, by the way, not cashmire.

cashmere drapery

Drapes are sometimes made in cashmere if their purpose is to close out the cold. As this is a description of an old house this sounds correct. Drapes are generally considered to be heavier than curtains and go from ceiling to floor.
