Someone is looking to make a documentary about a childhood friend of his (F), who has a chequered past, to say the least. This is a broad outline of his intentions, with a view to gaining funding.

not an integral part of his life?

They are trying to stress the difference between where he usually spent his time vs. places outside his realm of activity.

It's not the kind of text that requires absolute scientific accuracy, so I think "natural habitat" works well used in an ironic way. Thanks, everyone.

agree  Jack den Haan: I like the 'natural' bit. PS: Got that into Dr. L's entry before I saw this...

agree  philgoddard: I prefer this because it preserves the wit of the original - as Bryan points out, the word is more commonly used for animals, but here (and Bryan misses the point) it's being used ironically.

agree  Barend van Zadelhoff: I start to believe 'natural habitat' can do in English what 'biotope' does in Dutch here. Also found this on co.uk: TV star Lorraine Kelly ready to return to natural habitat after riding accident.
