like limping sheep

Explanation:
Maybe a bit too literal, but I think it sounds pretty good.

disagree  David Walker (X): but not exactly English
1 hr
-> Hmm, perhaps, but I do think it sounds rather funny. Depends on the type of text I suppose.

neutral  writeaway: just like Dutch, English is not a free for all, not a case of 'anything goes'/change? limping sheep isn't an English expression

-> Languages change. Guess who changes them? Indeed, we do./ What are Leslie C. Allen & Patrick Mahoney then? Belgians? (see my note)

agree  Michael Beijer: Totally agree, this sounds less biblical and much more footballish.

agree  Wim Jonckheere: excellent image, makes me think of "Chicken run"(the movie)

  -> Thanks

neutral  Kirsten Bodart: I would agree, but I don't know if 'lamme schapen' doesn't rather say something about their speed as well (a lame sheep moves much more slowly than a headless chicken, after all). You'd have to see images of the match.

-> Thanks - took the, now lost, quote from another football match

agree  Ronald van Riet: "headless" is a perfect expression for the way they played anyways (and no, I am not an Ajax-fan)

like a mob of brown's cows

Explanation:
Our mothers used to say to us: “Stop wandering about like brown’s cows.” There are two possible sources for this expression “brown’s cows”...

“wandering about like brown’s cows” means ambling around like a drunk. And that is the most likely source.
First there’s the obvious one: that cows are perceived as aimless animals and aimless behaviour (therefore) deserves comparison with cows. But cows are not aimless wanderers. As any dairy farmer will tell you, milking cows will walk on exactly the same path at exactly the same time every day. So we turn to the alternative explanation. And this is based on the fact that “brown cow” was once a humorous nickname for a barrel of beer (first recorded in 1725). The name may have come from the roundness of the barrel resembling the shape of a milking cow, and the milk that this cow gave was brown – not white. Based on this notion “wandering about like brown’s cows” means ambling around like a drunk. And that is the most likely source.

Rugby talk:
.... Along with poor S&C, and the issues that creates, the complete lack of imagination and verve in attack was appalling.
Simple plays were not executed. Mostly, after one semi-structured phase, they became a mob of Brown's cows that allowed no further options. Bowen and Gaffney need to take Bowen's advice to Pretorius and go.

agree  Michael Beijer: I think a lost sheep is a little closer to the original in terms of speed, perhaps, than a headless chicken.

like a bunch of lame ducks

Explanation:
Much was made of ODU's football and basketball teams being ineligible for CAA titles, but the Monarchs' lame-duck status and impending departure for Conference USA mean that all of their teams must travel the at-large route in order to get to postseason.

Sorry, it took me so long to post it. Generally ‘lame ducks’ applies to politicians, but as you see it can be used by association in soccer/baseball too.
