Dutch term or phrase: geografische omschrijving
Paper by a lecturer in marketing advocating radical change in approach to marketing. We've been through various phases: productdenken, klantdenken (klassieke marketing) and now waardedenken. Can't work out what he means by 'geografische omschrijving' here, as none of the usual dictionary options for omschrijving seem to make sense (to me), i.e. description, definition, specification, characterisation.

Om al deze redenen is het tijd voor een marketingrevolutie. Na de these van het productdenken en de antithese van het klantdenken, is de periode aangebroken voor de synthese: het waardedenken .
Waardedenken gaat uit van de bestaansreden van een product. Dit betekent dat het product een unieke oplossing biedt voor een bepaald probleem binnen een zekere geografische omschrijving.

Footnote after omschrijving:
De omvang van de geografische omschrijving hangt af van de bestaande concurrentie, de ambities van het bedrijf en is de resultante van de ambities en de ingezette communicatie en distributiemiddelen.

area / classification
Explanation:
If description, definition, etc. don't work then perhaps "area" or "classification"

Much as I liked the vagueness of Neil's "environment", the author eventually came back with the explanation "What I mean is a territory, a geographical area in which one is active." Simple in the end. Thanks, all.

I think that in this context the word pattern or outline might work - in fact I think pattern might work well

agree  Harry Borsje: I'd go for outline or boundary, interpreting 'om'schrijving as something 'circumferential'

in a certain geographic context

Explanation:
If often come across things when translating into Dutch. Here it concerns U.S. English: State-by-State Data, which I translated into geografische gegevens. I then felt you might use country-to-country. I found two hits, albeit both of them non-native.

I feel that your context offers room for verbal use as opposed to sticking to the noun as in 'varies from country-to-country'

But in looking at your text again, I felt that what is really meant is 'i (set) n a certain geographic context.'

Just a few musings . . .

Otherwise 'geographic region' -- not literally the same, but essentially the same meaning

a certain market environment

Explanation:
I find the Dutch text already quite vague, and if you cannot really understand the intended meaning of 'geografische omschrijving', then I would avoid translating it literally into 'geographic context'.

To me, 'context' is certainly a correct substitution for 'omschrijving/description', but 'geografisch' does not necessarily carry any topographic meaning here, imho. I think it has more to do with the market 'environment' in which the product is sold. The author further mentions 'competition', so that would be an indication to me that he means something along the line of ....

"Dit betekent dat het product een unieke oplossing biedt voor een bepaald probleem binnen een zekere geografische omschrijving"

This means that the product presents a unique solution to a given problem within a certain market environment.
