Trichloroethylene was > 99.5% pure, from Merck,
NaBH4 97.0%, NaOH > 98% and 25% aqueous
ammonia from Fluka. The catalyst MPB5 from Montecatini
Tecnologie was 0.5% Pd on carbon tablets of
ca. 2 x 5 mm, surface area 1000 m’/g, pore volume
0.6 cm3/g, bulk density 0.4 g/ cm3, whereas MPT5
was 5% Pd on powdered carbon, surface area
1200 m2/g and bulk density 0.5 g/ cm’. These catalysts
were washed with water until they tested negative
for chloride, using the mercury thiocyanate method.
