"points" sounds more formal than "choses", but it also depends on the context !

or you can just say "à commencer par les urgences / les urgences d'abord"

agree  Tony M: The idea of 'hot' is also sometimes that it is not only urgent, but also important, and not something you want to be reponsible for holding up, so you are eager to get rid of it...

  -> Yes, you are right. I just feel that in this context (seems to be professional?) "urgences" would fit in well... "brûlante" is a good translation, but I wouldn't know how to fit it without sounding "exagerated". I guess it depends on the context :)
