English term

unobtrusively influencing individuals’ attention

English to German Social Sciences Psychology
Nudges are based on the fact that people’s behaviour is influenced by a multitude of factors that go far beyond direct instruction, price incentives (e.g. subsidies or taxes), legislation and law enforcement. Research in behav-ioural economics and psychology has shown that nudges can be powerful and cost-effective tools of achieving voluntary compliance with socially beneficial goals. Example of nudges are default rules (i.e., what happens if the individual makes no decision), providing information at the right time (i.e., when the decisions are taken), struc-turing payments over time such that individuals can overcome their natural tendency towards impatience, ***unobtrusively influencing individuals’ attention*** towards particular aspects/consequences of a decision, the activation of peer pressure for compliance with social norms, etc.

Armorel Young Aug 11, 2017:
If I were being very nitpicking ... ... I would point out that "unterschwellig" means "subliminal", which is "below the threshold of conscious perception". The classic example of a subliminal message in psychology is flashing the words "eat popcorn" or "eat ice cream" on the screen so fleetingly that the audience isn't aware of having seen them. The "nudges" in this text are certainly subtle, but the are not subliminal - they just take a bit of thought and awareness for people to notice them.

Another difference is that subliminal messages are all about influencing people's decision-making, but "nudges" may steer people's behaviour without requiring them to make decisions at all - such as the default rules that specify that X happens if the individual takes no action.
