Premetto di aver trovato il libro in rete.

La frase precedente dice: "The large figure lumbers to his feet" (il tipo era sdraiato davanti alla porta), l'io narrante fa un passo indietro e spalanca gli occhi, dopodiché dice "I get the impression of pale bristle and dark blue eyes".

Sicché credo che gli veda prima la (sommità della) testa e poi gli occhi, ergo "pale bristle" indicherebbe i capelli.

"Bristle" sta letteralmente per "peli ispidi corti e dritti".
Dato che sulle prime avevo pensato anch'io a "barba" (una barbetta di peli corti e ispidi) ho confrontato con "stubble", e ho trovato questo:

Wordreference non è certo la bibbia, ma dalla discussione risulta che "bristles", al plurale, potrebbe starci per indicare una barba, ovvero i peletti sparsi e pungenti che rispuntano sul viso dopo la rasatura (googlare "bristles on the kin"), mentre al singolare sono praticamente tutti d'accordo che si riferisce alla testa.

Da 'sto ragionamento la mia proposta.
P.s.: a volte "alla marine" e "a spazzola" si sovrappongono, ma "a spazzola" possono anche essere più lunghi e tenuti in piedi con il gel...
