Para "steal" (Oxford) https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/steal no object, with adverbial of direction Move somewhere quietly or surreptitiously. Se podría usar "se acercaba furtivamente el gris opaco de la noche..." ... se iba acercando la oscuridad acechante y en aumento de la noche que llegaba... ... se acercaban a hurtadillas las sombras (grises) de la noche cuya inminencia era pronta... ... pero sobre los cuales la oscuridad de las sombras de la noche que estaba por llegar se acercaban - se cernían sigilosamente, cada vez más densas y oscuras... O variaciones sobre el tema...
