In the context of PCs, the term backplane refers to the large circuit board that contains sockets for expansion cards. Backplanes are often described as being either active or passive. Active backplanes contain, in addition to the sockets, logical circuitry that performs computing functions. In contrast, passive backplanes contain almost no computing circuitry. Traditionally, most PCs have used active backplanes. Indeed, the terms motherboard and backplane have been synonymous. Recently, though, there has been a move toward passive backplanes, with the active components such as the CPU inserted on an additional card. back-plane Explanation: Mother board is a different concept from backplane. A PC has a mother board, but buckplanes a much larger, thicker and have many more layers (up to 32, whereas a standard PC motherboard has 4 or 6). They also have less components soldered onto them A backplane is used in telecoms equipment switching centers, etc. Ericsson, Nokia and Alcatel are the largest consumer of backpanels in Europe. I've worked in this industry several years, an english word backplane (or backpanel) is used throughout, whether in Spain, France, Germay, etc. |
