APS has many meanings. On request, client has given meaning of APS: alimentation par le sol.
concentrateur is widely used in context. I would like to know if it refers to data concentrator or APS collector (shoes)

@Tony That certainly would make sense, though a system to protect other road users doesn't fit that well with smoke extraction shafts in tunnels, unless it's another section of the same system.

@ Asker It certainly seems as if 'concentrateur' is being used with the meaning 'hub' — in essence, it is probably just one place where information from several sources is brought together, and 'hub' is a modern term for that sort of thing, no doubt widely influenced by its usage in IT.

@ BDF In fact, it is a lot more plausible thna I'd originally thought. It turns out that this APS is a special system from Alstom, which allows 3rd-rail powering for trams without danger for other road users, as it is a 'smart' system that only applies power to segments of third rail while the tram is actually over them. Hence there is some sense in the notion of a 'hub' for data from the APS system.

@Asker I think you can delete "possibly" from my previous comment. If your client knows best, why are they paying a translator? Did that answer come from an engineer consulting this specific occurrence in the document, or from a PM in the agency looking it up in their glossary?

@ Asker I do not believe for one moment that 'concentratuer' could possibly mean 'collector shoe', and as we are clearly talking here about data, I feel sure it has to have the meaning of 'concentrator' — though do note that in IT it is also the word for a 'hub' (e.g. USB).

Hello BD Finch, my first observation was similar to yours but when requested to client to explain the meaning of APS, it was "alimentation par le sol" .

Client's interpretation of APS possibly wrong I suggest that, given the context, it is far more likely to mean Automate Programmable de Sécurité.
