Discussion

Robin Hardy-King (asker) Jun 1, 2014:
Thanks for the comments so far. The context is work placement at a Higher Education level. From the context it looks as though it can include doctors and pharmacists, but I don't have a lot of information myself.

Mpoma May 30, 2014:
transferable skills? the lack of context makes this more like a crossword clue. But thinking about it, why would someone be sent on a "stage de réorientation"? Isn't the idea that, for whatever reason, their existing skills (whatever they may be) are not needed much any more... so they have to build on what they've got. In Anglosaxonia the relevant buzz-expression is probably "transferable skills".
Nikki Scott-Despaigne May 30, 2014:
I agree that more context is needed here. "Stage" is a catch-all and covers anything from a 15 year old doing work experience through to adult education courses. So what have we got? "Réorientation" for what age group? In what context; academic or professional, or perhaps even a mix of both. This could for a lycéen who is considering shfiting over from a Bac Pro mécanique to a Bac Pro Commerce for example. It is could also be a nurse considering a career change. Yup, we really do need more information on this one Robin.

Here are some links for ''stage de réorientation":

What is a Career Exploration Internship?

An internship provides the opportunity for students to receive valuable insight into their chosen field by working part-time in a business or organization. The intent of this program is to offer students an opportunity to explore job possibilities, especially freshman, sophomores and students in departments without internships.

Refresher course

Could this be referring to some kind of refresher course for someone who has been away from the profession for a while, or to update knowledge of new technology, terminology, methods etc.? If so, does the original state what exactly was being refreshed?
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : guessing is the only option. where does réorientation come in?

career development course

as I send in my comment... isn't it (probably) to do with skills not longer being needed? ... so building on "transferable skills"? And the equivalent Anglo-Saxon euphemism is therefore "career development". You have no career any more my friend. About time you developed one.

reorientation course

Too obvious? Or maybe not. In the absence of more context it fits the bill.

Zero context. If no other information is given or available the only choice is a literal translation. "Reorientation" is equally valid in French and English, so why not use it it? Gallicism - I don't really think so, and, if so, so what?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Mpoma : a gallicism?... one that has yet to gain currency I'd say (no doubt it will). Your answer makes me think of that Schwarzenegger film, "Total Recall", I think, where his mind and personality are reorientated every so often. So maybe it does fit the bill
