to feel in awe

I wonder if the idea of 'awe' may work in this context. Obviously the word order and phrasing would need some alteration, but it would work here.

Awe refers to a feeling of respect for something which is superior to the person who is 'in awe'. The other alternative is the idea of "feeling insignificant".

It's worth pointing out by the way that a lot of FRE>ENG dictionaries translate "to be in awe" by "avoir peur" which is in 9 cases out of every 10 the incorrect translation. Whilst 'awe' can imply fear, it is usually mixed with wonderment and admiration. So do not be put of by this 'incorrect' translation in most dictionaries of "to be in awe".

Sorry, that should be 'do not be put ofF' (with an extra 'f')!
Peer comment(s):

agree Jocelyne S : Yes, I think "awe" is more appropriate here than "insignificance". Presumably the author doesn't mean to belittle the audience, but rather show how impressed they are by the "grandeur" of the work shown.

Though frankly I'm not clear why the "intimité de leur travail" makes the spectator "se sentir tout petit."
