French term

site champignon

French to English Tech/Engineering Internet, e-Commerce
Hi

This describes websites that surf a trend, popping up all over the web, for instance:

"Un site assez fade aux prétentions identiques à tout les "sites-champignons" qui poussent en ce moment pour surfer plus ou moins bien sur la tendance de la sortie amicale."

Often, these sites sell counterfeit goods:

Sites champignons, plateformes d'enchères en ligne, e-commerçants : avec l'avènement du haut débit et l'augmentation du nombre de connectés (17,6 millions d'abonnés en France au 31 mars 2008[1]), Internet est devenu une voie privilégiée pour le développement des réseaux de contrefaçons.

Any search for mushroom sites turns up sites... about mushrooms!

Any ideas what this might be in English (not "parasite site" apparently)?

Many thanks!

Sandra Petch (asker) Apr 25, 2010:
There doesn't seem to be an accepted and commonly used term for this type of site in English. It only appeared once in my text, in brackets after an explanation, so I dropped the part in brackets rather than use a made-up term. Many thanks to everyone for your time and ideas.
Sandra Petch (asker) Apr 23, 2010:
Examples Sorry, I think I've confused the issue. The examples in my question are just examples taken from a Google search to illustrate the term. I'm looking for a single term for "site champignon" in common usage, should such a term exist!
Sandra Petch (asker) Apr 23, 2010:
To Bourth By longer phrases I meant the "sites that are popping up like mushrooms" type of thing.
Transitwrite Apr 23, 2010:
I think fly-by-night suggests that the sites do not last in time.... maybe some of the mushroom-like ones do. The idea is that they are set up so fast and in large quantities. Or do I have the wrong end of the stick???
Bourth (X) Apr 23, 2010:
My "fly-by-night" is all of 2 characters longer than "champignon", though it looks more, admittedly.
Sandra Petch (asker) Apr 23, 2010:
Thanks for your ideas so far. Ideally I need a short answer, "something sites" rather than a longer phrase.

sites that pop up like mushrooms

No idea about any technical e-jargon for this, but could you not simply use "sites popping up like mushrooms" or "mushrooming"? (For your first quote anyway; not really snappy enough for the second quote you give - just "ephemeral sites"?)
Peer comment(s):

agree B D Finch : "Mushrooming" would mean they were getting bigger, so "popping up like" seems better. Toxic toadstools perhaps, rather than (useful/edible) mushrooms.

Thanks BD. I don't believe mushrooming refers to size, but to quantity: like mushrooms that suddenly appear in fields in great quantities overnight - and then are gone almost as quickly. So there's the "lots of them", sudden and ephemeral aspects

You yourself said they often sell counterfeit goods, which is mentioned in at least one of the refs above. Another uses "temporary", another "popped up" (like mushrooms).
In general they are disreputable.

If champignon in your text covers both "fly-by-night" and "flash-in-the-pan", one translation trick is to use one of these expressions on first encounter (the one more immediately relevant) then move on to "These xxx (the other term) sites ..." where "these" obviously refers back to the first encounter.

Alternatively, use both, together. Your 3-item list Sites champignons, plateformes d'enchères en ligne, e-commerçants for example would simply become a 4-item list.

If you go for the last options, will I get double points?
Note from asker:
Seriously?
I like "fly by night" but is it exactly the same thing. This seems to be more about the speed at which these sites appear... then again they no doubt disappear just as fast ("do a moonlight flit" as we used to say!).
