French term

une brique « Google »

French to English Bus/Financial Internet, e-Commerce
Ainsi, les multiples acquisitions dans le domaine (social networks) n’ont pas encore fait naître une brique « Google » capable de concurrencer Facebook ( voir les récentes initiatives de Google dans le domaine de la recherche sociale avec le nouvel outil +1)

veratek (asker) Apr 28, 2011:
@Tony But the text speaks of ONE brique, not a bunch of briqueS, so I thought they were speaking of Facebook as a brique. Now it's clearer, I agree with your comment, thanks.
Tony M Apr 28, 2011:
Not F/B But Vera, your text doesn't refer to Facebook as a 'brique' — it only refers to Google 'briques', which might well be regarded as 'components' which, taken all together, might give Google some functionalities similar to F/B.

@veratek Cor, you were sitting on your keyboard!
veratek (asker) Apr 28, 2011:
@bourth - Yes "building blocks" - that's the sense I had gotten, but couldn't think of a term.
veratek (asker) Apr 28, 2011:
@ victor Hi, I don't think we can speak of Facebook as a brique - a simple "composant." Unless they meant Google invents a bunch of composants which are capable to compete with Facebook. But Facebook is an entire system, not a mere component. I wondered if they didn't mean "brique" in a non-tech way, as a concept block, a whole new idea or application. Any thoughts?

component

Il s'agit de brique logicielle, qui peut aussi se dire "composant" en français (voir lien)
Note from asker:
Hi, I don't think we can speak of Facebook as a brique - according to the definition you posted.
I explained more of my reply in the discussion session.

agree Bourth (X) : Yup, other Google bricks being GoogleMaps, GoogleEarth, etc. "Blocks", maybe, as in "building blocks"?

agree Tony M : The whole point is, this isn't referring to Facebook, but to a component added to Google to make it more like Facebook!

Brick OS

They could be referring to the Google Brick Operating System.

One of the reasons I thought they might be referring to the operating system, was the fact that a 'brick' in the sense of a building block doesn't really seem to be appropriate as Vera points out in the discussion above.
The fact that the French 'brique' is in the singular doesn't surprise me, even if it is referring to Bricks OS.

Perhaps it is referring to bricks and clicks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bricks_and_clicks which is a business model.
Peer comment(s):

neutral rkillings : The name is actually Bricks-OS, and it's not Google's OS. Open-source project *hosted* at Google Code (previously at SourceForge).
