Assistant des Hôpitaux

French to English Medical Medical (general) CV
Hello,
This comes from the CV of a distinguished doctor. According to wiki Fr assistant des hôpitaux is a position which combines teaching and medical practice. However the Proz glossary gives Chef de Clinique/assistant des hôpitaux as Senior Registrar. I'm not sure whether two posts are being referred to or whether it's a joint post at the two establishments
Nomination au titre de Chef de Clinique à la Faculté et Assistant des Hôpitaux au CMC du Grau du Roi (CHRU de Nîmes)
Many thanks for any help!
Anne

SJLD Sep 5, 2010:
Well obviously his stint as chef de clinique-assistant des hôpitaux occurred before he "distinguished" himself.
Drmanu49 Sep 5, 2010:
"distinguished doctor" for a junior physician does not fit.
I work with a surgeon (the one who also operated me) who has contributed enormously to research on shoulder surgery techniques, epecially labral tears, but that was after he spent at least five years with the most famous shoulder surgeon in Lyon as chef de clinique.

Senior registrar is no longer used btw.
SJLD Sep 5, 2010:
In the NHS today, newly graduated doctors do two foundation years before going on to specialty training, where they are known as "specialty registrars". Explained in full on this site: http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/medical_training.shtml

Chef de clinique (à la fac) is the teaching role, Assistant des hôpitaux is the clinical role. And yes, this would correspond with what used to be called senior registrar in the UK.

I don't know of any country where a doctor 3 years after graduation would hold a professorship. Neither Chef de clinique nor Assistant des Hôpitaux is a high-ranking position in the medical hierarchy.
Anne Greaves (asker) Sep 4, 2010:
Well I wondered about putting that in! In fact he seems to have contributed enormously to research on surgery techniques on rotator cuff repair, amongst other things.

Distinguished I thought that only Consultants could claim to be distinguished?

If teaching in a CHU, professor or associate-professor in a teaching-hospital-

Nomination au titre de Chef de Clinique à la Faculté et Assistant des Hôpitaux au CMC du Grau du Roi (CHRU de Nîmes) is not a teaching position at the med school but may be one in hospital.
I work in the Grenoble Medical School and official positions are MCUPH and PUPH Maitre de Conférences et Professeurs des Universités in a Teaching Hospital

Of course there is no strict boundary and assistants do come to teach. But it is always under one of these positions' responsibility.

(senior) specialty registrar

Joint position of chef de clinique-assistant des hôpitaux.

Just in passing... French doctors get all excited about where they completed their postgraduate training and you will often see it mentioned in their letterheads - "Ancien interne des hôpitaux de Paris"... You would never see this on the letterhead of a British doctor.
