But what really has me stumped in the first part of the next sentence: is there a special meaning for the phrase **prendre le pas meme**

Here's my attempt at translation: And therefore, this is interesting because we can see the safety of utilization of this new anticoagulant which has not received approval either from the FDA or from the European Agency. The safety (has taken the same step??) on the effectiveness because there has been a decrease in cardiovascular mortality and this decrease in cardiovascular mortality is for the most part linked to a decrease in hemorrhagic accidents which have led to death.
