Hi,

The sentence is "changements dégénératifs en cervical bas"

Does this mean there is osteoarthritis in the lower cervical vertebrae?

Thanks

Thanks Sue!

@ Joanna. Regarding your supplementary question - I think this has to be your choice depending on the context, but I think you definitely need to indicate that bone is involved (osteo').

degenerative changes in the lower cervical spine

I think osteoarthritis is too specific. Other pathologies may be involved.

Degenerative spine conditions
What are degenerative spine conditions?
Degenerative spine conditions involve the gradual loss of normal structure and function of the spine over time. They are usually caused by aging, but may also be the result of tumors, infections or arthritis. Pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots caused by degeneration can be caused by:

Slipped or herniated discs
Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal
Osteoarthritis, or breakdown of the cartilage at the spinal joints

Degenerative Spine Causes
Aging and the general wear and tear associated with the body’s natural processes are the primary causes of degenerative spine conditions. Every time we twist, move and bend, strain is placed upon our spine. Many factors besides time can encourage or accelerate degenerative spine disorders, including:

OsteoarthritisOsteoporosisRheumatoid arthritisSudden acute injuries, traumas or accidents, such as those that may occur during a car accident, high-impact sport or hard fallInfectionsSpinal stenosis, or the narrowing of the spinal canalSlipped or herniated discsBenign tumorsCancerSmoking and alcohol abuseObesity or excess weightLack of exerciseMalnutritionDegenerative disc diseaseImproper footwearMaking strenuous, repetitive movements frequently, which often occurs when individuals have a job that requires manual or highly physical labor

Degenerative change is a broader term, widely used as indicated by the above refs, and covers osteoarthritis and other relevant conditions

Spine is preferable to vertebrae as structures other than the vertebrae can be involved and the ST is not specific
Note from asker:
Thanks Sue. This is very helpful. Quick question: they also use "atteinte ostéodénérative du rachis cervical" which I translated as "cervical osteoarthritis." Should I use "degenerative change" in this instance as well?
