French term

clarté aérique

French to English Medical Medical (general) Admission examination
Context:
Discrète majoration de la collection de la loge d'hépatectomie mesurant 23 mm surmontée d'une clarté aérique pour 14,4 mm précédemment.

Is this a collection of "fluid" around the hepatectomy site with aerated fluid? If not what on earth is it a collection of?

TIA Chris.

Discussion

Sue Davis Oct 26, 2020:
surely the air is above the "collection"
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 24, 2020:
@ All who helped Now reading this slightly differently and wonder if the collection includes the air-filled fluid as opposed to it being something different. So, pus or blood oozing out with air which gradually settles/collects.
Sue Davis Oct 24, 2020:
collection may refer to pus or blood see definition on www.granddictionnaire.com
liz askew Oct 23, 2020:
Well, it's your translation.
Drmanu49 Oct 23, 2020:
OK Chris!
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 23, 2020:
@ Manu and Liz After much head scratching I`ve settled on:
Slight increase in the fluid collection of the hepatectomy site measuring 23 mm topped with air-filled fluid vs 14.4 mm previously.
Drmanu49 Oct 23, 2020:
Nope just to explain what a hydatid cyst looks like. Enjoy your lunch Chris.
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 23, 2020:
@ Manu Just when I thought I could go for lunch, another comment/addendum/ ???/
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 23, 2020:
@ Liz In my question I asked if not fluid then what is "collected"? If it is fluid then why is it topped with fluid? Unless the fluid is topped with foam, like a pint of Guiness.
Drmanu49 Oct 23, 2020:
The hydatid cyst may appear as a well-defined fluid collection.
liz askew Oct 23, 2020:
Where does it say "cyst"

Drmanu49 Oct 23, 2020:
OK with me Chris!
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 23, 2020:
@ Liz and Manu So for the entire sentence we have:
Slight increase in the cyst found at the hepatectomy site measuring 23 mm compared with 14.4 mm previously, topped with air-filled fluid.
Hope that I`m on the right track after all the addendums etc.
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 23, 2020:
@ All Thanks for your efforts, off for a walk and clear my head. back shortly, Chris.

Structures which are not very dense, such as air, absorb very little of the x-ray beam. Most of the beam passes through the air and strikes the detector. As a result, these structures appear black on x-rays, termed 'radiolucent'.

I can't find a definition of the fixed phrase 'aerial clarity', deduced from "une clarté aérique" in French, but of the two words separately.
In the medical sense, whilst 'aerial' can be an aerial with antenna used for transmitting or reading radio waves, it can also be relating to, connected with or resembling air.
The source text states specifically that the clarity is of a 14.4mm preceding measurement in the air.
