So the term we're looking for is "couchage crayon". "Pencil coating" seems the obvious translation, but I'm not sure what it means.

The company Allimand makes machines for paper manufacturing. If you look on the English website version under '3- COATING AND SATURATION PILOT' 'applicator rod or blade coating' is translated as 'coucheuse crayon ou à lame' on the French version (under 3- PILOTE DE COUCHAGE ET D’IMPRÉGNATION). Again making me think 'crayon' is a kind of rod.
