La plaque d'appui aura une face plane du coté destiné à servir d'appui et à étre orienté en direction du support. Les vis, ou des pied-vis, ou autres organes de serrage peuvent serrer directement la pièce dure et ainsi enserrer entre eux et le support, la plaquette malleable et la pièce dure.

My first thought was a screw gauge or screw micrometer, but being an "organe de serrage", this must be some sort of watchmaker's clamp. For other obscure words, you might find the horological reference below interesting:
