Potence (fashion)

français vers anglais Autre Textiles / vêtements / mode
Does anyone know what this word might refer to in terms of clothing? I've not got much context (no pic) but 'potence à l'intérieur' is part of a list of features of a women's shirt. I wondered whether it might be a loop in the back of the neck to hang it up but I'd appreciate confirmation as I'm only guessing! And what would you call this in English anyway?!

Suzie Withers Aug 6, 2020:
@SafeTex I have taken that liberty! Although the asker had already guessed what it might be...
Anne McDowall (asker) Aug 6, 2020:
@ all Thanks for your various confirmations of hanging loop. I've closed the discussion simply because although this is what's needed, the French clearly isn't correct (by the client's own admission)!
SafeTex Aug 6, 2020:
@ all yes, "interior/inside hanging loop".
Whoever was the first on the right track should post this of course :)
Suzie Withers Aug 6, 2020:
I think hanging loop is fine, but you might want to say it's an interior one, because often hanging loops (or locker loops) on shirts are on the outside?
Anne McDowall (asker) Aug 6, 2020:
French probably wrong! I've just received the following reply from the client:
'Du fait de votre remarque, j'en viens à me demander si le terme français est exact...
Il s'agit d'une sorte de "crochet" en tissu au niveau de l'étiquette de marque à l'intérieur du vêtement, permettant d'accrocher le vêtement.
Voyez-vous mieux ?'
Still not sure what to call this in English. Hanging loop? Or just loop? Any thoughts anyone?!
Anne McDowall (asker) Aug 6, 2020:
@Robert Thanks for these links. I've now asked the client the question, so I think I'll wait for his reply before searching further (particularly as time is of the essence!)
Robert Such Aug 6, 2020:
I'd ask what it refers to on a few French fashion forums, if I were you. See if someone can point you in the right direction.

@Anne Yes, always worth an ask! Let us know if you find out!
Suzie Withers Aug 6, 2020:
@Tony M You could be onto something with internal yoke. It's a way of adding structure to a shirt. Some women's shirts have an internal yoke in a contrasting fabric, which would be a feature. But it's still a bit of a mystery!
Anne McDowall (asker) Aug 6, 2020:
@Suzie Yes, I think I'll have to go back to the client. (Thought I'd ask around first.) It comes up three times so I don't think It's a typo.
Suzie Withers Aug 6, 2020:
It is an odd one. I can't find any reference to potence being used for clothing. If it is a loop, then you could use "hanging loop". Can you ask for a photo or just ask the client what they mean? Could even be a typo?
Tony M Aug 6, 2020:
@ Asker The only thing I can think of is that it might refer to the sort of 'internal yoke' you get on some garments of this type — I've no idea why, other than perhaps to give better shape to the upper back (or help hide bra straps?!)

Thanks for replying Abdellatif. Can you provide any reference for this. I've not come across this usage in English before.

neutral Suzie Withers : Sorry, "stem" does not work in this context.

neutral Robert Such : I don't see it. I found a reference to a stem for handlebars on a bicycle.
