Fréquemment, mes pas me guidaient du Pont Cardinet à celui de l’Europe en longeant, rue de Rome, la *tranchée des Batignolles*. C’était toujours un spectacle vivant qui m’émerveillait. Les 141TC et TD, les 231 D, F, G et H, les automotrices « standard » et autres 040 TX auxquelles succédèrent les 040 DA, opéraient un véritable ballet.

La gare Parisienne du réseau de l’Ouest est la gare Saint-Lazare mise en service en 1842. Pour relier la gare Saint-Lazare et les Batignolles il a fallu initialement creuser un tunnel sous le bas de la butte Montmartre au niveau de la station de métro Rome. Pour répondre à la croissance du trafic des tunnels parallèles étaient nécessaires. Le tunnel ferroviaire des Batignolles fut supprimé après l'accident d’octobre 1921. Le résultat de ces travaux est la tranchée des Batignolles.
