neutral  Gordon Matthews: The key word is "to contemplate". My direct answer/translation would be "to learn to contemplate something". And I would use the word "actions" in preference to "deeds", which sounds old-fashioned to me.

neutral  Gordon Matthews: I banned "mankind" from my vocabulary long ago. "humankind" and "humanity" are perfectly acceptable alternatives. "mankind" excludes half of humankind.

  -> That's great. I'd be more than happy to replace mankind with humankind but that can hardly be the clincher here. There are other linguistic aspects to this query that I am far more interested in.

The whole phrase would then read: "so that humankind might learn to pay attention to the mindfulness and responsibility of their actions."
"to consider" or "to contemplate" would be alternative translations of "sich besinnen", but I think "to pay attention to" works best in this case.
