German term

Bärenstube

German to English Other History medieval hunting
Verbreitet waren die Hetzjagd mit Hunden und die Fangjagd mit Netzen, Gruben und sogenannten Bärenstuben.
I assume it's some kind of a way to trap a bear that was practiced in the Middle Ages, but all the hits I get are names of restaurants.

so-called "bear chambers" ("Bärenstuben")

This is a case where I would consider adding the original expression in brackets as a highly specific technical term. Assuming by context that the room in question is a trap, I have chosen "chamber" instead of "room" to replicate the rather historical tone of "Stube" and to indicate the small size of the space.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I think this would need a sentence of explanation - as sibsab's reference shows, this was an actual building constructed specially for the purpose.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This is the way I decided to phrase it, as it's something that as far as I know never existed in the US and there is no exact term. I did find the other suggestions from our colleagues (e.g., a trophy room), but this I think fits the context. "

Memorobelia room for bear hunt (the "bear" room)

could not copy out the text but here is the (long) link to the history / text. In case you are not able to read the old script: talks about particular room in the castle where photos are kept and records of encounters... (some of the pictures were later transferred to other venues) hope this is helpful

disagree philgoddard : Have you read the context?

ursus/bear trap

Die historische Bärenfalle war vermutlich etwas anders konstruiert, aber das Prinzip dürfte gleich sein.

bear pen

Just a guess really, but this is presumably meant to be something for keeping bears captive or rounding them up, rather than trapping them like a conventional bear pit.

bear cabin

another guess, as the meaning has evolved in a similar way as the German "Bärenstube"
the things that are presumably meant are still for sale as live traps and nowadays they look like big barrels on a cart

maybe just "bear trap", but that doesn't convey the idea of the building ("Stube")
