German term

pädagogischer Rahmen

German to English Medical Psychology Health and welfare
American English required.

From a psychiatric report. A boy with antisocial behavior is currently unhappy in his forster family. The psychiatrist recommends that he be placed in a youth welfare institution that offers accompanying therapeutic support.

Der klar strukturierte pädagogische Rahmen einer Jugendhilfeeinrichtung und flankierende verhaltensmodifizierende Maßnahmen sollen es ihm ermöglichen Einsicht in seine destruktiven Verhaltensweisen zu erlangen.

The clearly structured ..... setting (OR: The clear .... structures) of a youth welfare institution and accompanying behavior-modifying measures should enable him to gain insight into his destructive behavior.

I know that Pädagogik is notoriously difficult to translate into English. Please don't suggest anything with pedagogy - I have never yet come across a native English speaker who used this expression.

It does not mean educational here, but relates to child rearing.

Any help (with references preferably from US American sources) would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion

Thanks to all Although I have awarded the points to Johanna in the end, I would like to thank all of you who have assisted me with this your ideas.
Lynda Hepburn Jan 8, 2011:
"Remedial" has a much broader use than purely for children with learning difficulties. The Collins English dictionary gives two meanings, the first of which is "affording a remedy, curative" and the second of which is your meaning. Google "remedial structures" and see what you get.
Mech White Jan 8, 2011:
Remedial teacher puts the focus on the educational aspect, but you seem to think that is not what is required here. I still think you gave your own answer with 'child rearing'
Gudrun Maydorn (X) (asker) Jan 7, 2011:
There is no mention of punishment or anything criminal in the context!
Gudrun Maydorn (X) (asker) Jan 7, 2011:
@ Lynda From my years in UK I remember remedial teachers whose role it was to help slower children keep up with the rest of the class. Would remedial still fit the bill if there are no deficits in formal education?

clear support structure

IMO, a clear „support structure“ is exactly what is offered here.
cf: www.dcsf.gov.uk/14-19/.../coventry_youth_mentoring_case_stu...

Since you were asking for US terminology, “Jugendhilfeeinrichtung” would be a “youth care facility”

[It is expected/we hope] "... that the clear support structure of a youth care facility, supplemented by behaviour therapy will make him aware of his destructive behavioural patterns"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Johanna, your suggestion is almost identical with the expression that I have finally used. Many thanks."

instructive setting

I feel this would encompass education plus behaviour skills etc.

However "pedagogic" is commonly used and understood within psychiatric/medical reports/documents etc

and so it doesn't sound so clumsy with structured, also thought of defined.......clearly defined instructive setting

remedial framework

I would suggest "remedial" might suit your context.

See example below from "Promoting Optimal Adolescent Development through Conflict Resolution Development..."

Of course the quote should read "The application of conflict resolution..."
Example sentence:

The application conflict resolution modalities to adolescents is conceptualized within an educational/developmental, preventative and remedial framework...

agree casper (X) : I was toying with 'correctional', but 'remedial' seems to fit better

agree Ramey Rieger (X) : that's the best. "educational" would sound less stern, but I think "remedial" hits on the correct course of action - from the psychiatrist's point of view.

Why not use your own suggestion of child rearing? Although pedagogic will fit here too and is used by professionals in this field
