German term

Lebensmeldung

German to English Tech/Engineering Telecom(munications) system signal
As far as I can work out, this is a signal emitted at regular intervals to show that part of system is still functioning correctly.

Anyone know if there is a proper name for this? No guesses please. I can guess myself:-)

Discussion

John Dale D.D. Jun 13, 2008:
I think it is a test signal, much the same way a test signal is sent along with a test card on television broadcasts - it lets you know all is well with the system
Ventnai (asker) Jun 13, 2008:
I don't have much context, but as far as I can work out it is a hotel locking system, so I presume the readers or touch pads on the doors are sending signals to confirm they are still working properly
Susan Zimmer Jun 13, 2008:
what kind of system?

alert signal

This is a term much used in railway circles to signal that a specific safety device is still working, or that a I/O port on the train-bus is in order, and as a n ENS, I am inclined to favour this over "test signal", purely because my understanding of a test signal is rather one which is manual rather than automatic - IOW, the electrician tests after an appliance is initialised by sending a test signal, but that's the lot. An alert signal by contrast is sent every so often all the time an appliance is "alive", or alert. If it fails to arrive at its designated receptor, the alarm is sounded.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks very much. Test signal was too general for me and there are quite a few Google hits for this. "

agree Susan Zimmer : How do you know that your alarm system will reach us when you need it to? We will program your alarm to periodically send a test signal to ensure that it is working properly. http://www.wyandottealarm.com/centralstation.html

sign of life signal

test signal seems a bit too general to me

"a sign-of-life signal is sent every 15 minutes to ensure that the contact is still communicating"
