Can anyone offer a convincing translation for the phrase above in the context below. Word reference offers 'cross-section' but obviously this will not do in the context. Would 'cross-analysis' or something along the lines of 'global overview' convey the meaning here?

There is a contrast in the Italian between the static "spaccato" and the movement implicit in "cambiamento". "Snapshot" highlights this better than "insight", which is otherwise quite a good option.
"Civilisation" perhaps isn't the best option for "civiltà", which has no article and is probably better construed as a plural than a singular. "Societies" is one possibility if the prize has a fairly local focus or perhaps "global society" in the singular if its scope is more universal.

The reason I chose Giles' answer was because his 'snapshot' solution would also have worked but further included the very valid addition of ' global society' instead of 'civilization', which I agree, is far more suited to the context here. : I like this suggestion because of the idea of looking "inside", which is the same as to the idea of cutting into something (i.e. cross-section). Also widely used term that flows well in this context.
