Japanese Cypress, bell Explanation: ...two things having to do with the construction of a taiko - a Japanese drum (see: http://www.gouldmusic.com/articles/taiko.pdf). ;-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 10 mins (2004-11-08 18:15:08 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- \"Jin\" also seems to be a Japanese word for \"person\". Like I said, \"Gane\" is a Japanese word for \"bell\" (as far as I know). ;-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 14 mins (2004-11-08 18:18:38 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I also found these Australian words: \"GAE v. to go (pa.t. GAEN, GANE; pr.p GAUN, GAEING)\" and \"JIN n. a mythical Muslim being (also DJINN, JINN, JINNEE)\" (see: http://www.scrabble.org.au/words/3sdefs.pdf). :-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 17 mins (2004-11-08 18:21:59 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Also see: http://www.websters-dictionary-online.org/definition/jin AND http://www.websters-dictionary-online.org/definition/gane |

陣鐘 Explanation: It could be 陣鐘 . According to Kojien(Japanese-Japanese dictionary), this was a bell used to signal troops to advance or retreat during military operations. It may be either a gong or a fire bell(半鐘). -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 hrs 41 mins (2004-11-09 00:46:17 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Note that you asked for the English term for this. There is no english term other than ¥"jingane¥"; please accept my description and invent your own term as needed (perhaps ¥"military bell¥") 陣=military camp, or army troops 鐘= bell. |
