laminaria japonica is a brown kelp seaweed - see reference.
How it gets this name, I am not sure, I thought in classical Latin, "laminaria" meant thin metal, and thus, by extension, coins. But "japonica" is not classical Lating either - the Romans didn´t know about Japan.

Laminaria japonica is of course the botanical name. It´s called \"kombu\" in Japan, but it doesn´t seem to have an English name.
