starszy marynarz

Polish to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime ranks
chodzi nie o marynarkę wojenną, tylko zwykły statek pasażerski.
znalazłam tylko dane o wojsku: able-bodied seaman, albo samo seaman.
W kontraście mam zwykłego marynarza (seaman recruit, lub ordinary seaman)

I guess that I didn't formulate my answer properly. I suggested two translations, but I didn't intend to give the impression that they were interchangeable, but rather that it should be one or the other. That's why I included the references. I apologise for the lack of clarity and for the ensuing confusion. Mea maxima culpa.
