Portuguese term

vinculações distendidas e flexíveis

Portuguese to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. academic abstract
Hi everyone! I'm finding this academic abstract difficult to translate to English due to the terminology used, but here I can't work out if 'distendidas' is used in a negative or positive sense, seeing as 'flexible' seems positive. Any help appreciated!

Mario Freitas Feb 20, 2017:
Yes, Margariga But in the case of academic papers, it's a constant. The other ones may happen sporadically. But regarding academic papers and abstracts, this is 100% true. So just get rid of these. They are headaches for no ROI.
Notice in this case how the author used "vinculações" instead of "vínculos", and the absolutely terrible and poor choice to use "distendidas", among dozens of other possible and much much better words. This is just so unfortunate. And the author likely thinks they wrote a wonderful, intelligent and phylosophic text of a genius! Poor creature.
Mario, all that also applies to a lot of other translation "projects", unfortunately.

Abstracts Academic abstracts are not translation jobs. They are tortures.
1. Small jobs, hard work and little money
2. One-time job, and the client will disappear forever
3. The client is not used to translation jobs, and will invariably think your rates are absurd
4. Extremely pedantic and ornamental language, usually incorrect, and if you translate it to something better, the client will complain you didn't translate the beautiful terms they chose
5. The client thinks they speak English, and they will try to make you change your translation to theirs.
My decision: I haven't accepted abstract or academic paper translations for over three years now, and I will not forever, if I can.

flexible and far-reaching bonds

1. think 'bonds' is key here.

2. 'Far-reaching' is probably more relatable.

3. I find that sometimes inverting the order of modifiers makes more sense, and they are processed more easily by the hearer/reader if the short one comes first. (That goes in the book I've been trying to write for the last 30 years!)

agree Mario Freitas : I was thinking what could be a decent alternative for the terrible "distendidas". Good solution!

extended and flexible bindings

From my understanding of the phrase in context with the entire text, "distendidas" will be used in a possitive way as well. That is my understanding since they are assuming possible causes of the mobilization between Europe and Brazil.

long-distance and flexible relationships

Sugestão. Em geral, o termo que se usa para esse tipo de relacionamento é "long-distance".
