Romanian term or phrase: Description of humanitarian foundation's duties
"...indiferent de categoria socială în care se încadrează (copii, bătrâni, persoane singure, orfane sau văduve, persoane abandonate, persoane cu handicap, familii dezorganizate, etc..>"

Please explain what this means in detail as we cannot simply say "abandoned person" in English, we need to be more specific - what in the person's life has been abandoned?

persons abandoned by their families
Explanation:
This is what I think it means, I've also seen a few Google hits for people abandoned in hospital (by their families probably), meaning that someone took them to hospital and they were probably to ill to be discharged without a caretaker, but there was no one to fulfil that role.

Explanation:
It seems to be a sheer translation issue. In my point of view, it is not the question the asker mentions: what in (...) has been abandoned. It would be enough [pardon me the possible naivety] to choose an appropriate term to translate persoane abandonate. I am sure the term castaway does.

Asker: (I think you mean "outcast", which is the incorrect register sadly.) Thank you for trying.

disagree  Peter Shortall: Acest cuvânt se referă la o persoană ajunsă pe o insulă pustie în urma unui naufragiu, se potrivește aici ca nuca-n perete.

Asker: SO alienated people...? We would not often say "abandoned" in a social care context.

Asker: Thank you.

agree  Andreea Sepi, MCIL (X): individuals (such as seniors or children) who have been abandoned by their families - I imagine street children would also fall into this category

-> I think you're right :) It could probably refer to any person who needs a carer and has been abandoned by that carer, so adults with disabilities could probably be abandoned as well.
