Since his early twenties, Henning Carlsen has been involved in filmmaking, the first fif teen years as a documentarist. His first feature Dilemma (62) is based on a novel by Nadine Gordimer. This was followed by the Swedish production The Cats (64), and Hunger (66) for which Per Oscarsson received Best Actor award at Cannes. From the struggling author in this latter film, Henning Carlsen portrays the French painter Gauguin in Oviri (86), and unconsummated love in Two Green Feathers (95) - like Hunger based on a novel by Knut Hamsun.
