This is from an essay written c.1965 by Julio Caro Baroja re the marriage patterns and provisions for inheriting property among Navarrese (both at home and in the "diaspora").
I do not understand what "por poder" means in the present context.
El viejo indiano de Méjico o la Argentina *llamaba* al sobrino joven y, a veces, le hacía socio o heredero. Otras veces volvía al país a casar con la sobrina; otras la *llamaba* o se casaba, por poder, con una chica de la vecindad.
