Spanish term

de uno u otro signo

Spanish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
This appears to be a set phrase, and I think I understand the basic meaning but I'd like to know the most precise way or ways to render it in English. The context is below, from a book on Philosophy, from Spain.

Lo que sí se observa como elemento común en las expresiones artísticas de uno u otro signo es el aprecio por la naturaleza, concretada en las nuevas técnicas para reproducir espacios según las leyes de la perspectiva y en el papel preponderante del cuerpo humano.

Discussion

moken Sep 23, 2008:
It seems to me that it's a reference to the 'lay/religious' duality set apart in the previous para. by "por un lado" and "y por otro", rather than the artistic media.
Nikki Graham Sep 23, 2008:
Secular and Christian I think it refers back to the secular and the Christian ideas. Their common point seems to be nature.
Kathryn Litherland (asker) Sep 23, 2008:
The previous sentence reads ...la ambigüedad del Renacimiento se manifiesta, por un lado, en la secularización de muchos motivos estéticos, con la proliferación de las temáticas mitológicas y representaciones sensuales, y por otro, en la exaltación de la fe cristiana a través de edificios, pinturas, esculturas y composiciones musicales. So perhaps it refers back to types of artistic media: architecture, painting, etc.?
moken Sep 23, 2008:
Hi Kathryn - as per Laura's note, this expression is often linked to ideology (political or otherwise). The 'signo' in question might well relate to something mentioned in the previous paragraph and your best translation could lie therein. :O)

Si habla de dos tipos de expresiones artísticas, podrías utilizar:

"in both artistic expressions" o algo así.

En esta expresión "signo" equivale también a ideología. Dependiendo del contexto podrías traducirlo por "ideology" o "philosophy".

Muchas gracias.
agree moken : Buenas observaciones todas ellas. Bien podría tratarse tbn de los defensores de tal o cuál escuela...creo que habría que ver el párrafo anterior para precisar mejor. :O)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks--I think Álvaro's observation that it is refering to secular vs. sacred art is also helpful in understanding, but it is vague in the original and so I have left it vague in the translation as well "of any sort/type/kind""

in both camps

I was wondering whether it might be possible to use camp here (as in ideological camp), but I'm not sure from context provided exactly what is going on here (or how many different "camps" could be involved)
