Source text - English This book aims to show that the world, including human beings and their consciousness, is not originally a world of things but a world of words; that, fundamentally, it is structured like a text and can therefore be read like a text.
This objective makes the exposition difficult, for even the simplest descriptive statement (e.g., "the blueberries have already begun to ripen") breaks something that is simultaneous, unified, and connected into words that appear one after another and side by side. Things of consciousness—for example, problems in linguistics—are even more difficult to communicate, since many, if not all, questions appear simultaneously and need immediate answers.
This work therefore makes use of, and continuously pre-sents to the reader, three scientific disciplines that deal with consciousness: epistemology (the theory of cognition), cognitive psychology (the psychology of cognition), and linguistics. The principles of the latter will probably be unfamiliar even to readers interested in spiritual science. The seeds of these disciplines may, however, be found in Rudolf Steiner's works, and I myself have discussed them more or less comprehensively, for example in The Life of the Soul, as well as in other works.

This epistemological approach attempts to take up what was given by Rudolf Steiner, but in a more differentiated way appropriate to questions being asked today. Readers may find, however, that the greatest problem may be the unaccustomed combination of these three disciplines.
This is why problems are not presented linearly. Instead, the train of thought proceeds in loops and spirals, touching repeatedly on certain themes in order to do justice to various points of view. The whole book is a single statement. Therefore readers will have to be patient until they have read it to the end. Much that is not discussed, or discussed insufficiently, along the way, will be explained in later sections and, ultimately, through the whole. This, at any rate, is the intention and goal.
Our method will be primarily to direct the reader's attention to phenomena of consciousness that are normally ignored and overlooked. The radical proposition that we can perceive only phenomena for which we have concepts or ideas or for which such concepts or ideas can be developed in the course of observation—applies unconditionally to the observation of consciousness. Such observation begins with everyday consciousness. In this work we attempt to present the results of research that has made use of other planes of consciousness, in terms of the effects of these other planes of consciousness on completely observable phenomena and functions of everyday consciousness. Readers should not connect any preconceived notions or representations with the terms used here but instead form concepts and ideas anew on the basis of the text.
The methodological aim of such a study cannot be to communicate knowledge or theories; rather, it seeks to stimulate the reader's participation in the movement of thinking so that the reader can arrive at the intuitions necessary for understanding the text. Only in this way can the life of the world and of consciousness be experienced.

Quest’approccio epistemologico cerca di riprendere ciò che è stato dato da Rudolf Steiner, ma in maniera più differenziata, appropriata a domande poste al giorno d’oggi. In the course of the individual life-span, as in the evolutionary history of mankind, formative and sen¬sitive forces are released from the subtler parts of the human organism. Before becoming free, they form the body, they effect its growth, and they work par¬ticularly on the formation of the corporeal organs of cognitive life. To the extent that they complete their bodily task, their liberation is brought about by the gradual incarnation of the individuality, of the thinker and speaker in man, as the latter unites with the organism. Birth, learning to speak and think, the second teeth, sexual maturity-these are stages in the incarnation of the higher man. This incarnation pro¬ceeds continually up to the midpoint of life, when excarnation begins. The self-incarnating Logos-being takes-or should take-responsibility for both the or¬ganism and the forces that are freed. The latter could become cognitive forces; that would be their legitimate role. And they did so in earlier times under the guidance of the "gods." Called perceptual- and think¬ing-forces in the preceding chapters, they appear as limit-experiences and, if not taken up appropriately by man, become the substance of the subconscious. In the universal realm where these processes reign, the distinction between inner and outer has no meaning, and so it is possible (and appropriate) to portray these same forces from two standpoints on the level of mirrored consciousness.

Also to be counted among those formative forces that spoil if they do not become conscious for the individual are the forces of destiny, tied to both the bodily and the subtler organism. The growth of "the Logos that belongs to the soul" sets in motion the life- and sensitive-forces of man; as universal forces, they can at all times mediate the limit-expe-riences that are beginning to be conscious and also the universal knowledge beyond these limits.
What is noticeable during life in a general way-the liberation of growth- and sensitive-forces, their transformation into cognitive forces-occurs on a small scale in every cognitive act. In every cogni-tion in which the nervous system plays a part, a lit-tle death occurs in the latter which is then partially reversed in the course of the next sleep. But the sub¬tler parts of the rhythmic and metabolic systems are also affected in every cognitive act. This is why both systems also play a part in remembering.
The incarnation of the true I, of the speaker and thinker in us, consists in this subject building it¬self an I-organism out of the forces that are begin¬ning to be free. This organism does not separate it from the universal processes, which continue within the liberated forces, thus making cognition possible. The liberation of forces takes place in a different way and to a different degree in the three systems of the body: the forces are most free in the head-system, less so in the rhythmic, and least of all in the meta¬bolic- and limb-system. But all forces cooperate in the processes of cognition and memory.

Inoltre, da considerare tra quelle forze formative che deteriorano se non divengono coscienti per l’individuo, vi sono le forze del destino, legate sia all’organismo corporeo che a quello più sottile. La crescita del “Logos che appartiene all’anima” mette in moto le forze sensitive e vitali dell’uomo; come forze universali, queste possono mediare ad ogni momento le esperienze-limite che stanno iniziando a divenir coscienti, ed anche la conoscenza universale oltre a questi limiti.
Ciò che si può notare durante la vita in modo generico – la liberazione delle forze sensitive e di crescita, la loro trasformazione in forze cognitive – ha luogo in scala più piccola in ogni atto cognitivo. In ogni cognizione in cui il sistema nervoso gioca una parte, avviene in esso una morte in piccolo che viene parzialmente annullata nel corso del successivo sonno. Nous considérerons maintenant, d'une façon plus particulière, un des principaux aspects de l'opposi¬tion qui existe actuellement entre l'esprit oriental et l'esprit occidental, et qui est, plus généralement, celle de l'esprit traditionnel et de l'esprit antitraditionnel, ainsi que nous l'avons expliqué. A un certain point de vue, qui est d'ailleurs un des plus fondamentaux, cette opposition apparaît comme celle de la contem¬plation et de l'action, ou, pour parler plus exacte¬ment, comme portant sur les places respectives qu'il convient d'attribuer à l'un et à l'autre de ces deux termes. Ceux-ci peuvent, dans leur rapport, être envi¬sagés de plusieurs manières différentes : sont-ils vrai¬ment deux contraires comme on semble le penser le plus souvent, ou ne seraient-ils pas plutôt deux complémentaires, ou bien encore n'y aurait-il pas en réalité entre eux une relation, non de coordination, mais de subordination ? L'opposition, en effet, existe bien dans les apparences, cela est incontestable ; et pour¬tant, si elle était absolument irréductible, il y aurait une incompatibilité complète entre contemplation et action, qui ainsi ne pourraient jamais se trouver réu¬nies. Or, en fait, il n'en est pas ainsi ; il n'est pas, du moins dans les cas normaux, de peuple, ni même peut-être d'individu, qui puisse être exclusivement contemplatif ou exclusivement actif. Ce qui est vrai, c'est qu'il y a là deux tendances dont l'une ou l'autre domine presque nécessairement, de telle sorte que le développement de l'une paraît s'effectuer au détri¬ment de l'autre, pour la simple raison que l'activité humaine, entendue en son sens le plus général, ne peut pas s'exercer également et à la fois dans tous les domaines et dans toutes les directions. C'est là ce qui donne l'apparence d'une opposition ; mais il doit y avoir une conciliation possible entre ces contraires ou soi-disant tels ; et, du reste, on pourrait en dire autant pour tous les contraires, qui cessent d'être tels dès que, pour les envisager, on s'élève au-dessus d'un certain niveau, celui où leur opposition a toute sa réalité. Qui dit opposition ou contraste dit, par là même, désharmonie ou déséquilibre, c'est-à-dire quelque chose qui, nous l'avons déjà indiqué suffisamment, ne peut exister que sous un point de vue relatif, particulier et limité.
En considérant la contemplation et l'action comme complémentaires, on se place donc à un point de vue déjà plus profond et plus vrai que le précédent, parce que l'opposition s'y trouve conciliée et résolue, ses deux termes s'équilibrant en quelque sorte l'un par l'autre. Il s'agirait alors, semble-t-il, de deux éléments également nécessaires, qui se complètent et s'appuient mutuellement, et qui constituent la double activité, intérieure et extérieure, d'un seul et même être, que ce soit chaque homme pris en particulier ou l'humanité envisagée collectivement. Cette conception est assurément plus harmonieuse et plus satisfaisante que la première ; cependant, si l'on s'y tenait exclusivement, on serait tenté, en vertu de la corréla¬tion ainsi établie, de placer sur le même plan la contemplation et l'action, de sorte qu'il n'y aurait qu'à s'efforcer de tenir autant que possible la balance égale entre elles, sans jamais poser la question d'une supériorité quelconque de l'une par rapport à l'autre ; et ce qui montre bien qu'un tel point de vue est encore insuffisant, c'est que cette question de supé¬riorité se pose au contraire effectivement et s'est toujours posée, quel que soit le sens dans lequel on a voulu la résoudre.
La question qui importe à cet égard, du reste, n'est pas celle d'une prédominance de fait, qui est, somme toute, affaire de tempérament ou de race, mais celle de ce qu'on pourrait appeler une prédominance de droit ; et les deux choses ne sont liées que jusqu'à un certain point. Sans doute, la reconnaissance de la supériorité de l'une des deux tendances incitera à la développer le plus possible, de préférence à l'autre ; mais, dans l'application, il n'en est pas moins vrai que la place que tiendront la contemplation et l'action dans l'ensemble de la vie d'un homme ou d'un peuple résultera toujours en grande partie de la nature propre de celui-ci, car il faut en cela tenir compte des possibilités particulières de chacun. We are now going to consider, with more detail, one of the main aspects of the opposition presently existing between the oriental and the occidental mind [spirit], which is, more generally, the same for the traditional and anti-traditional mind, as we have explained. Under a certain point of view, which nonetheless is the fundamental one, this opposition appears like the one between contemplation and action, or, more precisely speaking, as founded on the respective places conveniently assigned to the one and the other of the two terms. In their relation, they may be regarded in various ways: are they really as opposites as we most often seem to think of them, or are they not complementary instead, or again, is there among them a relation, not of coordination, but of subordination? These are the different aspects of the question, which relate to as many points of view, though of rather unequal importance, each of them justifiable in some respect and corresponding to a certain order of reality.
To begin with, the most superficial point of view, the most exterior one, is the one consisting in the pure and simple opposition of contemplation to action, as though they were two contraries in the proper sense of the word. The opposition actually exists in appearances, this is undisputable; nevertheless, were it absolutely irreducible, there would be thorough incompatibility between contemplation and action, so much that they could never be found reunited. Now this is actually not the case; there is no people, not at least in normal cases, nor individual perhaps, who could ever be either exclusively contemplative or exclusively active. In truth, we have here two tendencies, where the one or the other is almost necessarily prevalent, in such way that the development of the one seems to unfold at the detriment of the other. For the simple reason that human activity, understood in its most general sense, cannot be equally nor simultaneously exerted in every domain or in every direction. This is what gives us the appearance of an opposition; but there must be a possible conciliation between these so-called contraries; and besides we might say as much for all contraries, which cease to be so when, for recognizing them, we need to rise above a certain level, the one where their opposition has its full reality. Who says opposition or contrast says, at the same time, disharmony or imbalance, that is, something that, as we have pointed out already, cannot exist but under a relative point of view, particular and limited.
In considering contemplation and action as complementary, we thus place ourselves at a much truer and deeper point of view than the previous one, because the opposition is now to be found reconciled and resolved, as its two terms are in some way balancing each other. It seems to be all about two elements equally necessary, mutually completing and sustaining each other, and constituting the double activity, inner and outer, of the same very being, be it a particular man or humanity collectively considered. This conception is assuredly more harmonious and satisfying than the first one; however, were we to adhere to it exclusively, we would be tempted, in virtue of the correlation so established, to place contemplation and action on the same plane, so that we would only need to endeavor as much as possible to keep the balance between them, without ever to question the presumed superiority of the one in relation to the other; and what clearly shows such a point of view being still insufficient, is that such a question of superiority is on the contrary actually present, and always has been, whatever the sense in which we have wished to answer it.
The important question in this regard, anyway, is not one of actual predominance, which is, by and large, due to temperament and race, but one of what we may call legal predominance; and the two things are related only up to a certain point. No doubt, the acknowledgement of the superiority of one of the two tendencies will exhort the more its development, preferring it over the other one; but, in practice, it is no less true that the place held by contemplation and action within the whole life of a man or of a people will always be largely resulting by its own nature, because of the need to account for the peculiar possibilities of each one. Noticeably the aptitude for contemplation is more present and more generally developed in the Eastern people; there is probably no country where it is so much developed as it is in India, and that’s why it may be considered the representative per excellence of what we have named the eastern mind[spirit].

Source text - English There are certain words in common use which appear plain-spoken enough, but the meanings of which turn out to be extraordinarily vague and indeterminate. Two such words, for instance, are “materialism” and “spiritualism”. I have a suspicion that a great deal of mischief would have been avoided if more people, who are happy to make use of them, stopped more often to think about their meaning, and it is that suspicion which led to my choice of this topic.
In the first place, if we are to use the terms “material” and “spiritual” intelligently, it seems clear that we must know – or at the very least must have tried to find out – firstly what we mean by the two words “matter” and “spirit” themselves, and secondly (and it is here that the other word in my title will become relevant) what is the relation between them. Afterwards, in the space left to me, I shall be drawing one or two conclusions which I hope will prove to be of more than theoretical interest.
If, then, we take the word “matter” and look at it squarely, the first thing we notice about it is its extreme abstractness. Of all the abstract terms in the language it is very nearly the most abstract one can find. Perhaps that sounds as if I am being paradoxical? No. I don’t mean it that way at all. To say that “matter” is a very abstract word is not the same as proclaiming that matter does not exist, or anything of that sort. It is abstract in the way that a word like “insect” or “bird” is abstract. We never perceive a bird with our senses; what we do perceive is some particular starling or thrush. “Bird” means a number of elements or qualities which all starlings and thrushes and other species have in common (the habit of flying through the air is one of them). Consequently it is something we cannot perceive, but can only think. If this is this what is meant by an “abstraction”, one will see at once ho much more abstract is “matter”. For “matter” means something which starlings have in common not only with all other starlings, not even only with all other winged creatures, but also with lions and tigers and motorbuses and the Eiffel Tower and …well…and so on.
Now the element which all these things indubitably have in common is that we apprehend them through the senses. So we shan’t be far wrong if we define “matter” as some element or ingredient common to all that is perceivable with the senses. But as it is the actual meaning of the word that we are considering, that is, the sort of thing people have in mind when they use it, I think we must add (in view of popular interest in physical science) that “perceivable” here means either actually or theoretically perceivable. Even in that particular starling we do not, we are assured, actually perceive the particles of which it is composed. But we are also very definitely assured that those particles are, in their nature, perceivable as well as thinkable; not only so, but even that they are the basis of all perception, inasmuch as it is only their presence, outside of our minds and independent of ourselves, which provides us with something to perceive. It is their presence or absence which distinguishes an actual perception from a hallucination or a fancy. They are the world we are conscious of; the rest (that is the familiar macroscopic world of mountains, mice, and motorbuses), however objective and independent of ourselves it may appear to be, is in fact only the form our subjective consciousness takes, owing to our physical organisms and to our conscious and unconscious psychic activity.
Now all this begins to raise an issue into which I do not wish to be drawn, because it is not really relevant to what I shall be trying to say. I mean the vast difference between the modern theories of physics and those of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which are sometimes distinguished from it as “classical” physics. If it is true that the ordinary man’s notion of “matter” is still closely associated with the notion of solidity – so that the expression “solid matter” is almost a tautology – it is now also true that the steadily increasing emphasis laid by physical science on energy as a basic factor in material solidity places even the ordinary man in difficulties as soon as he stops and begins to think what he means by “matter”. Perhaps it is also true – as I often hear mentioned – that the world-picture of modern physics is therefore more “spiritual” than that of classical physics. But I do not want, on this occasion, to be drawn into all that. And I think the best way of fining a shortcut that will take me past it is the following.

Vi sono certe parole di uso comune che sembrano dirsi senza peli sulla lingua, ma il cui significato si rivela poi straordinariamente vago ed indeterminato. Due di queste parole, per esempio, sono “materialismo” e “spiritualismo”. Ho il sospetto che una buona dose di malintesi si potrebbe evitare se un maggior numero di persone, felici di farne uso, si fermassero più spesso a riflettere sul loro significato, ed è questo sospetto che ha guidato la mia scelta di questo tema.
In primo luogo, se vogliamo utilizzare intelligentemente i termini “materiale” e “spirituale”, sembra chiaro che dobbiamo sapere – o almeno dobbiamo aver provato a cercare – primo, quello che intendiamo con le due stesse parole “materia e “spirito”, e secondo, (ed è qui che l’altra parola nel titolo diverrà rilevante) qual’è la relazione tra esse. Di tutti i termini astratti nel linguaggio, questo è molto probabilmente il più astratto che si possa trovare. Risuono forse paradossale? No. Non l’intendo affatto in quel modo. Dire che la “materia” è un termine molto astratto non è per proclamare che la materia non esista, o qualcosa di simile. E’ astratto nel modo in cui una parola come “insetto” o come “uccello” è astratto. Noi non percepiamo mai un uccello coi nostri sensi; quello che percepiamo è un qualche particolare tordo o stornello. “Uccello” significa un numero di elementi o qualità che tutti gli stornelli, tutti i tordi, e le altre specie, hanno in comune (la consuetudine a volare per aria è uno di questi elementi). Di conseguenza è qualcosa che non possiamo percepire, ma che possiamo solo pensare. Se è ciò che si intende per “astrazione”, si potrà subito vedere quanto più astratta sia la “materia”. Poiché “materia” significa qualcosa che gli stornelli hanno in comune, non solo cogli altri stornelli, e neanche solo con le altre creature alate, bensì anche coi leoni e con le tigri e con gli autobus e con la TourEiffel e…bene…e così via.
Ora l’elemento che tutte queste cose hanno indubbiamente in comune è che noi le rileviamo tramite i sensi. Non sbaglieremmo quindi molto se definissimo “materia” l’elemento o l’ingrediente comune a tutto ciò che è percepibile coi sensi. Ma essendo questo il proprio significato della parola che stiamo qui considerando, ovvero, il genere di cosa che il più della gente ha in mente quando la usano, penso che dobbiamo aggiungere (in vista del popolare interesse per la scienza fisica) che “percepibile” qui significhi o effettivamente oppure teoricamente percepibile. Anche in quel particolare stornello noi non percepiamo effettivamente le particelle di cui esso è composto, ne siamo convinti. Ma siamo pure decisamente convinti che quelle particelle sono, per loro natura, tanto percepibili quanto pensabili; e non solo, ma perfino che esse sono le basi di tutta la percezione, fintanto che è solo la loro presenza, all’infuori delle nostre menti e da noi indipendente, a provvederci qualcosa da percepire. E’ la loro presenza o la loro assenza che distingue un’effettiva percezione da un’allucinazione o fantasia. Esse sono il mondo di cui noi siamo coscienti; il resto (ovvero, il familiare mondo macroscopico fatto di montagne, topi, e autobus), per quanto appaia obiettivo ed indipendente da noi stessi, è in effetti solo la forma che prende la nostra coscienza soggettiva dovendola al nostro organismo fisico e alla nostra attività psichica cosciente ed incosciente.
Tutto ciò inizia ora a sollevare una questione in cui non voglio trascinarmi, perché non è proprio rilevante con ciò che proverò a dire. Mi riferisco alla vasta differenza tra le moderne teorie della fisica e quelle dei secoli diciottesimo e diciannovesimo, in essa a volte distinte come fisica “classica”. Se è vero che l’ordinaria nozione che l’uomo ha di “materia” è ancora strettamente associata con la nozione di solidità – così che l’espressione “materia solida” è quasi una tautologia – è ora anche vero che un’enfasi in costante crescita posta dalla scienza fisica sull’energia quale fattore di base alla solidità materiale, pone anche l’uomo ordinario in difficoltà non appena egli si ferma per provare a pensare cosa egli intenda per “materia”. Forse è anche vero – come spesso sento accennare – che l’immagine del mondo della fisica moderna è quindi più “spirituale” di quella della fisica classica. Ma non voglio, in questa occasione, trascinarmi in tutto ciò. E penso che quanto segue sia il modo migliore di trovare una scorciatoia che mi porterà oltre.
