Translation - English André Citroën was born into a family of diamond merchants in Paris in 1878 and developed a passion for science from a very early age. When André was 6 years old however, his father committed suicide after undertaking some risky business speculations and his mother died shortly after, leaving a once happy and wealthy family in ruins. Thanks to the financial support of his relatives, André was able to lead a hard but bearable life, and even attended the world-renowned Ecole Polytechnique. Upon graduating from university in 1900, André went to visit his grandmother in Poland for the holidays. On the way, he happened to notice a cog with an upside-down V-shaped pattern on it. This small discovery was to become a great source of inspiration for the young André. When he came back from his grandmother’s, he set about inventing what became known as the double helical gear system. In 1905 André created his own small company to sell his own patented products. Because of the helical gears’ ability to smoothly and effectively transfer power, the system quickly spread to the rest of Europe. 1912 was a crucial year for André Citroën. In that year, he travelled to the United States and visited Henry Ford’s factory, a visit which was to have a huge impact on him. He suddenly realized what he had to do: he had to create his own car factory and manufacture cars.
